Eltham Primary School Construction Underway

Construction work has commenced on site at Eltham Church of England Primary School in Royal Borough of Greenwich following planning approval. The building, designed by LSI Architects, will be constructed by Kier Construction.

The project will see the refurbishment of the existing school building, which was one of the first National Schools, funded by local residents in the mid-nineteenth century and is maintained under the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education.

The scheme, procured through the Education Funding Agency Contractor’s Framework, will allow the school to expand from a 315 pupil school to a 420 pupil place 2FE primary school, including a new 26 place nursery.

The scheme responds to the key objectives identified in the brief, to creating an efficient plan form that is site responsive and respectful to the surrounding area. The proposed location of the new building has been carefully considered and the proposal responds to its context to minimise impact to open space and neighbouring buildings.

Peter Courtney, Associate Partner at LSI Architects commented, “Through collaboration with all major stakeholders we believe the sensitively designed and environmentally responsible new building, combined with a sensitive refurbishment of the existing school building, will provide inspirational, 21st century teaching and learning spaces. The use of traditional materials in a modern interpretation with the careful introduction of colour, has created a design that is both imaginative and appropriate.”

The school will remain in operation throughout the works and the completed school will be ready for occupation in May 2017.
