Next Phase of Work Underway at UEA’s Earlham Hall

The extension will accommodate the University of East Anglia law clinic as well as office and meeting spaces ancillary to the University’s School of Law and Enterprise Centre.

Work to provide a new extension to the existing newly refurbished Stable Block building at Earlham Hall is underway after receiving planning permission by Norwich City Council.

The extension will accommodate the University of East Anglia law clinic as well as office and meeting spaces ancillary to the University’s School of Law and Enterprise Centre. The scheme, to be constructed by MJS Projects, will help to further provide a unique teaching facility for the UEA law school with a level of usability fit for a 21st Century University.

The proposed extension makes a sensitive modern intervention to the collection of Listed Buildings at Earlham Hall and will see works to the courtyard at Earlham Hall completed, including the refurbishment of the former potting shed and associated landscaping.

The single storey pavilion building sits within the structure of the external freestanding walls forming an enclosure to the rear courtyard, and to provide the most efficient and compact layout to minimise the buildings footprint. The existing courtyard wall, which the new building abuts, is to be taken down and rebuilt as part of the new pavilion structure.

The main entrance is located off the landscaped courtyard south of the new building, leading into a new glazed link which connects the new extension with the recently refurbished stable block.

10 new rooms for academics are each formed with external walls and windows providing natural daylight to work spaces.  Two meeting/interview rooms associated to the law clinic are directly accessible off the main entrance link as well as from the law clinic itself.

Rectilinear strips of roof lights separate the new building from any existing historic structures and minimise the visual impact of the new building upon the Listed structures.

High performance glazing with composite PCC metal framing sections with exposed internal timber sections combines with facing brick panels to compliment the colour of the brick work of the existing stable block and main hall.

A ‘monk’ brick bond connects the building visually with the garden walls, while a subtle animation of the façade is provided through a continuous band of stack bonded soldier coursing below a slim protruding aluminium parapet coping profile. The combination and arrangement of materials, such as frameless glazing between buildings creates a light and airy structure to contrast with the mass of the Listed Buildings.

The project is the latest phase of work to be undertaken at the UEA’s Earlham Hall following completion of the project to refurbish the stable block in 2017 (pictured below).
