Model Making Work Experience

We were delighted to be joined recently by Annabel Everson, a model making student from Arts University Bournemouth, into our Norwich office for two weeks work experience.

We asked Annabel to build two façade models, one of The Britten Building at Gresham’s School and one of an elevation study on our Westwick Street residential project to be displayed as part of the 2017 Festival of Architecture in Norwich and Norfolk exhibition at The Forum.

Annabel worked the two models up in CAD before heading out into the model workshop under the guidance of model maker James Parkinson.

The Gresham’s School Britten Building model is made of laminated layers of frosted Perspex clad in a combination of maple, cherry and grey stained magnolia veneers to represent each different cladding treatment. The model takes into consideration the depths of the elements of the building – such as the colonnade and the project first floor elevation – creating definition between those elements but maintaining a low relief façade style.

The Westwick Street Models are a physical response to an elevation study developed during the design process for this scheme, demonstrating how we could break down the apparent mass and scale of the building and bring refinement to the scheme. The elevations are constructed from a combination of acrylic and ply, with engraved window details on two of the four elevations. To achieve the two tone brick treatment of the facades, a combination of cherry and oak veneers have been used.

After completing her work experience, we received a picture from Annabel, captioned:

“During my time with you a lot of people asked me if I’ve learnt anything, so last night I wrote a list of all the things I learnt from everyone I spoke to, and attached is a photo so you can see how long it is!”
