This commission followed various projects at Parkside Hospital in Wimbledon. At the outset a number of feasibility studies were undertaken for alternative sites. The brief required a radiotherapy treatment facility with two linear accelerators, and a ten place chemotherapy department, along with all the necessary supporting facilities. Structural systems and complex service installations were integrated to accommodate specialist equipment within highly controlled, yet patient friendly, environments.
Planning constraints and the ‘locally listed’ status of the existing building necessitated a sensitive approach to the historic context. The floor area is increased by 60% and a new 8m deep basement houses the linear accelerators and plantrooms.
