The £2.2M Addenbrooke’s Major Trauma Centre for Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust increased patient capacity by 30%, and provided 7 full-size trauma bays, Rapid Assessment Treatment (RAT) Rooms, decentralised patient care stations, and new ‘chair-centric’ area. RAT rooms are provided adjacent to the ambulance entrance to allow ED staff to assess patients on arrival, to quickly determine where they should continue their care. Dedicated rooms resolve privacy and dignity issues for both the affected patient and others around them.
Effective early user-group consultation enabled the design to allow for phased implementation to minimise service interruption.
