Made In Oakfield

LSI Architects was delighted to be invited recently to take part in an architecture education initiative called ‘Made in Oakfield’ by collaborative Matt+Fiona in partnership with Hull City of Culture 2017.

The scheme has been shortlisted for the AJ Small Projects Award 2018, you can register your vote for the project by clicking here.

The project was a twelve week design project in which Matt + Fiona worked with students from Oakfield School in Hull, helping them to design their own allotment ‘den’ on the school’s nearby plot. This culminated in a 5 day build of the den, with Architectural assistants at LSI Bradley Moore and Dovile Ciapaite joining the Matt + Fiona team, students and staff at Oakfield school and a variety of other volunteers to make it possible.

The den serves as a satellite classroom for extra-curricular activities and as a sheltered space when working on the allotment.

Involvement with the project has been a fantastic opportunity to help Oakfield school strengthen relationships with the wider community and foster new links across the city. On a personal level, both myself and Dovile found that the project was an excellent opportunity to reflect and learn firstly through making but also by teaching others.
