UEA Student Residences Phase 1 & 2
1400 en-suite, study bedrooms have been built using concrete tunnel-form construction in phases over 6 years, to LSI’s masterplan.
Phase 1, completed in 2005, provides 400 bedrooms within two blocks that are continuously curved in response to an established mound on the site. Phase 2 provides a further 900 bedrooms in five curvi-linear blocks, following the arrangement set out in LSI’s masterplan for the extension of the original Denys Lasdun designed campus towards the Eastern boundary of the UEA. The siteplan responds informally to Lasdun’s overall site grid, and the internal layout provides social groupings of 8 and 12 rooms in ‘horizontal flats’ each served by kitchen-diners. Signature colour render and timber clad core structures punctuate the façade, providing identity and wayfinding to the residences.
