Brook Mead Academy
Delivered for the Department for Education via the CF21 Framework, the Brook Mead Academy project moves the school out of temporary buildings and into a new, purpose-built campus.
The design responds directly to the Academy’s ambition to raise aspiration and attainment. Through an extensive client engagement process, LSI Architects worked closely with the DfE and school leaders to achieve compliance and embed user priorities into the building. The result is a campus that reflects the school’s own vision and its community.
Key design decisions emerged from this collaboration: the central placement of the library ensures that reading is encountered throughout the school day, reinforcing a strong literacy culture championed by the Principal. The green feature cladding and interior palette draw from the school’s own colour scheme, creating a sense of identity and belonging.
Light-filled classrooms, visibility across floors, and a biophilic-inspired interior incorporating natural tones, textures, and patterns create a calm, welcoming environment that supports wellbeing and concentration for both pupils and staff.

Brook Mead Academy is one of the UK’s first net zero carbon in operation secondary schools, and the first of its kind in the East Midlands. The fossil-fuel-free building is equipped with solar PV panels, air source heat pumps, and a natural ventilation system, with additional PV canopies installed across the car park and playgrounds to maximise energy generation.
Passive environmental strategies reduce the need for mechanical intervention, while the brownfield location supports sustainable land use and regeneration. The project was delivered using a component-based, offsite manufacturing approach that reduced waste and maintained high quality throughout.
The modular grid and considered spatial planning provide the flexibility needed to accommodate future changes in curriculum and pedagogy without significant reconfiguration. Community-accessible facilities extend the building’s value beyond the school day, generating wider social and economic benefit for the local area.

The new campus provides modern facilities for 1,200 pupils in Years 7–11, addressing a critical shortfall in one of the most deprived local authority areas in England. The campus includes a Teaching Block with 33 general classrooms and 23 specialist teaching spaces, a Learning Resource Centre, main hall, activity studio, dining hall, and an independent community Sports Block. Flexible breakout areas and outdoor classrooms including a sensory garden enable adaptive, varied approaches to teaching and learning.
Developed on a brownfield site and integrated within a mature natural landscape, the school achieves a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor environments, promoting engagement, movement, and social interaction.
