LSI-Architects-GSTT-Surgical-Admissions-Lounge

LSI recently worked with Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust on the refurbishment of their Surgical Admissions Lounge (SAL), located in their Tower Wing.

A new layout will enable patients to flow through the department from start to finish; first they will be taken into one of the clinic rooms to be assessed and sign the appropriate paperwork, and then taken to appropriate changing space where they will remain until collected from the lounge by a member of the surgical team.

Privacy and dignity requirements within a mixed-sex department like this are extremely important, and so these have been met through the provision of separate changing spaces. Furthermore, the departments layout has been designed so that patients do not mix with the opposite sex once they have changed into their hospital gowns. One-way mirrored glazing has also been introduced in the staff base, which sits between the two changing spaces, allowing passive supervision in a dignified manner.

The end result is a clean, calming and dignified space, made complete with legible design decisions such as the inclusion of timber for doors intended for patient use.
