Morley College London North Kensington Centre for Skills
The new refurbishment of the North Kensington Centre will increase the range of learning and engagement opportunities available to the local community and provide a welcoming, inclusive space for everyone.
A £13M transformation of Morley College London’s North Kensington Centre for skills building, creating state-of-the-art new educational facilities alongside modern, welcoming and inclusive new community facilities.
The project incorporated the refurbishment and extensions to the existing 1950’s main school building, as well as the demolition of an old caretaker’s building.
A new café at the front, alongside a new large multi-use community hall, has enabled the college to significantly expand their offerings and improve existing facilities for both students and the wider community.
The front extension has been finished with a dark grey render, providing a contrast with the existing building, and highlighting the new entrance point. A landscaped plaza and garden area have also been added, giving the college a renewed presence within the street frontage.
The existing building fabric was improved strategically to provide the best value return for reducing energy demand and performance. The bulk of these efforts saw the replacement of the existing leaking roof with a new fully insulated build-up, and the replacement of existing windows with double-glazed units with integrated NVHR systems.
LSI worked closely alongside departments to understand their requirements, with 3D visualisations used to communicate how the new facilities would look to staff, students, and the wider community.
The campus continued to operate during the building project, crucially requiring the project team to undertake construction work in a series of phases to mitigate disruption over two years.
