LSI Architects: New MRI Facilities at Southend University Hospital

The project comprised the remodeling and extension of the existing department to provide two new MRI rooms and clinical support accommodation, seeking to increase the MRI capability of the diagnostics department.

One of the scanners is designated for paediatric users and another is designed for bariatric use. The project also provides a new reception suite and three patient bays with associated support accommodation.

The project sits at the heart of the hospital site, linking existing buildings and forming a new infill extension.

Co-ordination of artwork throughout the scheme enabled the Trust to achieve spaces sensitive to the users. The design of the paediatric scanner to look and feel like a journey into space, as opposed to the potentially scary experience of an MRI scan, as well as other areas that were more influenced by nature. The end product is a facility that provides cutting edge diagnostic capabilities for the region, that is also non-clinical and offers a more uplifting experience for patients.
